US Election Special – November 08, 2024

Donald Trump Wins 2024 Presidential Election, as Republicans Take Back Control of Senate

Welcome to another U.S. Election Special by FTI Consulting’s Public Affairs Americas team, where we review key moments of the presidential election over the past week and their implications for shaping American politics and beyond.

Trump’s Economic Populism Message Wins Back the White House, Harris Concedes Race: Former President Donald Trump has won the 2024 Presidential Election, securing sufficient electoral college votes to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris by winning key battleground states including Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Trump also won the popular vote, the first time in 20 years that a Republican presidential candidate has done so since former President George W. Bush in 2004. Speaking at his election night party in Florida, Trump said the election result represented an “unprecedented and powerful mandate” for Republicans. On Wednesday, Harris conceded the race by speaking at her alma mater, Howard University in Washington, D.C. The Vice President said she would “never give up the fight for our democracy” and called for a peaceful transition of power.

Republicans Win Majority in the Senate: Republicans won back control of the U.S. Senate with a notable margin, which the Democratic Party previously held a narrow majority in. Votes are still being counted in two Senate races as well as dozens of races for the U.S. House of Representatives to determine which party will hold control of the chamber currently held by the Republican Party.

Economy and Jobs Drove Votes for Republicans: According to the Wall Street Journal, the top issue that was most important for voters was the economy and jobs (39%). This was followed by immigration (20%), abortion (11%), healthcare (8%), climate change (7%), crime (4%), gun policy (4%), racism (4%), and foreign policy (3%). Trump’s messaging on the economy resonated with a wide swath of voters, resulting in Harris losing ground across key Democratic constituencies, even in states outside of the battleground states. The outlet also notably reports that young voters made up 16% of the electorate, with men ages 18-29 voting decisively for Trump.
