ESG Reporting Strategy in 2026

On July 3, the European Commission adopted the revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) as part of the Omnibus I simplification package.

The revisions provide more certainty around the final reporting requirements, making compliance more manageable and enabling in-house reporting teams to get started. Assuming neither legislative body objects during the scrutiny period, which is largely viewed as a formality at this point, the package will enter into force for all in-scope companies —but several important questions remain:

What level of reporting consolidation makes most sense given EU-specific and proposed third-country (N-ESRS) reporting requirements?  How should organizations balance a clear, uniform, decision-useful reporting with data availability and compliance?

How can I refresh my double materiality assessment quickly and cost-efficiently to confirm my organization’s material topics, disclosures, and datapoints? How can I leverage the updated, top-down materiality approach during this process to focus the breadth and scope of my reporting?

How will ESRS simplify and replace reporting processes? Where will ESRS reporting add another layer of complexity through competing frameworks like ISSB, CDP, GRI, and TCFD—and how can reporting teams find efficiencies across overlapping requirements.

If you’re navigating the revised ESRS, CSRD compliance, or broader sustainability reporting strategy, we can help. What questions is your team thinking through right now?
