Unlocking Access to Health Research & Innovation Programmes in the EU and globally: Strategic Communications Case Study

SITUATION

The varying rules and objectives to apply for  research and innovation (R&I) funding in healthcare and life sciences make it challenging to identify which R&I funding programme(s) could be the right fit.

NIRO was was designed to help navigate the complex world of R&I funding opportunities in the European Union (EU) and around the globe.

OUR ROLE

Thanks to an initial mapping exercise done in collaboration with the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), FTI Consulting developed a free of charge web-based tool to enable any organisation or individual stakeholders identify relevant EU R&I funding programmes.

On the basis of this initial project, GSK supported the expansion of the tool to cover R&I funding opportunities for global health outside the EU.

OUR IMPACT

NIRO stands for Navigating Innovation & Research Opportunities. It is a free of charge web-based tool that helps identify relevant research and innovation (R&I) available in the EU and beyond.

Users complete a short questionnaire, and based on their responses, the tool generates a tailored compilation of relevant funding opportunities.

The tool also includes an overview list that allows users to filter programmes based on call status (EU-level funding programmes) and disease type (funding opportunities outside the EU).

"To advance research and innovation in health, it is crucial that the very best projects get funded. This can only be achieved by providing fair and transparent information to applicants about the different R&I opportunities that are out. NIRO helps the scientific community make a critical step in that direction: this simple, free of charge web-based tool helps identify in a few clicks the relevant R&I funding programmes in the EU and globally."
