Health Decisions for the Well-being of the World

A world where health decisions improve our populations’ well-being and make our countries safer is possible. It requires scalable partnerships and fully involving public and private sectors.
I recently returned to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and represented FTI Consulting and United States Council for International Business (USCIB) ahead of a meeting of health ministers.

Q4 2023 Healthcare Quarter in Review

While speaking at a Business at OECD health forum, I shared three insights to help guide upcoming conversations:

It is not only up to the health ministers to design health policy. Finance, education, employment, and innovation ministers also have an active responsibility. Given its economic focus, the OECD should incorporate this thinking into its annual Ministerial Council Meeting and feature health as part of the agenda that brings together Ministers from all these agencies every spring.

On top of its sanitary functions, health plays a double role as a pivotal element of national security. Acknowledging this duality and acting in consequence is one of the best ways we can move past looking at health as a cost that needs to be contained and treating it as a strategic investment.

We need to “deconfine” health through more trust and dialogue between businesses and governments. We already know the risks today that will be our headaches tomorrow — anti-microbial resistance, sedentary lifestyles, mental health, and digital illiteracy — so it’s time to roll up our sleeves and favor long-term partnerships that can take us from diagnosis to solutions.
