Done Deal – Insights from our M&A and Activism team – July 2023

Insights from our M&A and Activism team

This month our Done Deal newsletter includes an overview of navigating transaction communications from our newly appointed Global Head of M&A and Activism and views from our corporate finance colleagues on their experiences as interim CFO’s during transactions, building on the insights we covered in recent months on the role of communications during deals. Finally, we feature a discussion with Senior Managing Director Renée Law on how she communicates through an unsettled market.

In Conversation with Ed Bridges: Navigating Transactions

We hear from our new Global Head of M&A and Activism, Ed Bridges, on the importance of communications planning to ensure an effective transaction and the unique and integrated offering that FTI provides throughout the process.

Office of the CFO – enabling successful transactions, business continuity and a summer holiday?

Transactions are hugely time-consuming and can put a huge strain on internal finance teams which have become lean in nature and are faced with planning for downturns, protecting margins in rising inflationary and interest rate environments, and increasing performance visibility. Together with our Corporate Finance colleagues who specialise in M&A advisory services including merger integration, business transformation and strategic advisory work for the chief financial officer, we take a look at the ways organizations should approach the issue of bandwidth when they have a large transaction on the horizon.

Meet our Team: 30 seconds with Renée Law

What is your focus area at FTI Consulting?

In Australia, I lead the M&A and investor relations, and ESG, practice areas. I get a lot of satisfaction from advising and supporting clients as they navigate different critical events. One client, I worked with consistently over 6 years, as they prepared for IPO, through multiple transactions, a takeover defence and then eventual trade sale.

What M&A trends are you seeing in your marketplace?

I’m seeing much more complexity in M&A transactions getting up and over the line. With unsettled markets, deal timing and moving swiftly is critical. Also, it has become vital to understand the issues of key stakeholders beyond the financial stakeholders as the power to disrupt a deal has become distributed. Solid scenario planning, preparing for activism, understanding the environment in which the company is operating, and the deal is landing in, is a must.

Name one new thing you just learned from or about a colleague?

I learnt that one of my colleagues took all his friends to a day spa for his bachelor party. I was not expecting that!

What do you do outside of work that helps you reset and stay sharp for the next professional challenge?

Getting out of my head and into my heart and body, so an intentional move out of serious to playful mode. I love to spend time with my partner and daughters (we are currently into making pasta together), getting into nature, to a yoga class, a play and the gym are all great balances for me.
