Case Study – Managing a Nation State and National Security Issue

An industrial defense company serving the US government and commercial customers across a diverse set of industries detected likely Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) activity believed to be associated with a nation state.

Our role

Our team was retained to advise the company on the issue. The threat actor was determined to have exfiltrated sensitive information associated with government and commercial programs. Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation and potential national security implications, the process required a significant amount of discretion and careful handling of sensitive information.

Working alongside external legal counsel, we developed a robust communications strategy to provide regular and transparent updates to government and commercial customers surrounding the forensic investigation and the company’s’ state of security.

We worked with program leads to manage and respond to program-specific customer questions. We also helped plan for potential leak scenarios involving media, Congress, and other senior government officials in the event the incident became public.

Our Impact

The incident was successfully managed with the company’s key stakeholders, who continue to rely on the company for manufacturing services in sensitive and classified programs.
