FTI Consulting Launches Communications and Board Readiness Program for CISOs

Secure Your Seat Curriculum Aims to Close Communications Gap between CISOs and Other Business Leaders

Washington, D.C., Feb. 2, 2023 — The Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Communications team at FTI Consulting, Inc. (NYSE: FCN) today launched Secure Your Seat, a unique personal training program that will help chief information security officers (“CISOs”) communicate more effectively with boards of directors and senior executives about cybersecurity risks to protect and enhance enterprise value.

According to FTI Consulting’s recent survey “CISO: Communications Redefined, Navigating the Journey from Control Room to Boardroom,” CISOs and information security leaders struggle to clearly communicate — both internally and externally — about their role, the management of cybersecurity risks and programs and the positive impact good cyber governance can have on their organizations. According to the survey, 58% of CISOs claim they struggle to communicate technical language to senior leadership in a way that is relatable, and 82% of CISOs say that they feel pressure to make things sound better than they really are when they are in front of their board of directors.

With changes looming to cybersecurity regulation and leadership teams seeking to improve oversight of cyber risks amidst increasing sophisticated cyber threats, this communications gap poses a significant risk to organizations. CISOs must be equipped to engage in productive conversations with the entire C-suite and board of directors while mitigating investor and media scrutiny. Closing the gap can ensure new cyber regulations do not mean new liabilities for senior leadership and allow CISOs to articulate risks and opportunities to different audiences.

“The role of the CISO has evolved. They must have great technical chops and be best-in-class business leaders. Gone are the days when CISOs could just rely on their IT and cybersecurity expertise to do their jobs well,” said Meredith Griffanti, a Senior Managing Director and Co-Leader of the Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Communications team at FTI Consulting. “CISOs today are under more pressure than ever to demonstrate resilience, preparedness and response capabilities, while also navigating the internal and external expectations from senior leadership. It is imperative that CISOs be knowledgeable business leaders and comfortable in high-stakes situations as they answer to the board and their organization’s customers and regulators. Secure Your Seat will prepare CISOs to be key thinkers at the C-suite level, giving them hands-on training and a live look at how strong communication skills can lend to a more resilient, cyber-savvy organization.”

FTI Consulting’s Cybersecurity & Data Privacy Communications team has supported the response to hundreds of cyber crises, advising on how to communicate cybersecurity issues to C-suites and boards of directors. Drawing on the team’s deep expertise, Secure Your Seat will train CISOs on how to communicate with senior leaders about cyber risks, return on cybersecurity investments, and prioritization and governance needs.

As new regulation demands cyber and technical expertise on public company boards, Secure Your Seat will also help participants strengthen their current position to secure their own board seat and serve as an advocate for strong cyber governance for other organizations, in addition to their own.
