To enable the successful implementation of a new business model, our client who is global specialty chemicals company, acknowledged the need to provide development for functions whose roles were changing from previously being considered expert support roles, to business partnering roles required to influence effectively at a strategic level.
In partnership with the internal Talent and Organizational Development function and Finance Academy we have developed a programme that focuses on the development of business partnering skills for functional experts.
The three day face-to-face programme is underpinned by a 360 degree feedback report completed before the training to raise participants’ self-awareness of their ability to build business relationships based on trust. Day one, which is introduced by a senior leader to set the context of the programme, focuses on using this and other models and approaches to build a toolkit of techniques that can be used in any combination to achieve a positive outcome. Day two is dedicated to putting those techniques into practice with professional actors to practice real, challenging conversations.
Day three takes this one step further and challenges the participants to work together on a case study to produce a strategically focused business case which is presented to a panel of business stakeholders for discussion and feedback.
We have produced detailed, function specific case studies that closely reflect the reality of the work of each function. The programme is delivered to Finance and HR populations currently and we have developed a combined programme that includes both together.
To ensure the learning is implemented after the face-to-face training, there are two virtual reconnect sessions which are integral to completing the programme. These take place 6 and 12 weeks after the training and focus on participants sharing successes, discussing and their challenges with the groups working together to helps individuals identify effective solutions and next steps. Further support is offered by closed Yammer groups providing a social learning platform which is ongoing throughout and after the programme itself.
Feedback from participants and the stakeholders has been consistently good and we regularly review the objectives and program against the feedback to enhance the product.
Participants are reporting an enhanced ability to do the different jobs that are now required of them. This feedback is also shared within the business and we are now talking to other functions and regions around the world about wider delivery of the programme going forward.
