Our client, an international specialty chemicals company, recognised the need for consistency in how their people are managed and the capabilities of the people managers. They developed a behavioral framework that set expectations of people managers and needed support to communicate and embed it into their everyday working practices.
With recent changes at Board and Senior Leadership level, this initiative was introduced as the foundation of effective leadership behaviour across the organisation globally. With over 60,000 employees, we had to develop an approach that enabled consistent development of large numbers of leaders across many countries concurrently.
We worked with the Global Leadership & Management Development Manager to build a programme that develops both new and existing leaders in the essentials of leadership within the organisation, underpinned by their new Leadership Behaviours framework. The programme consists of a core face-to-face element followed by a year long curriculum of bite-sized and virtual reconnects sessions to further build on and refresh the learning.
Part of our client’s principal set of objectives was for this programme to be sponsored by senior leadership and for it to be delivered worldwide.
Engaging senior leaders in storytelling training and the programme being openly supported by the CEO, has led to every core module being introduced with a two-hour session presented by a senior leader. Each leader shares their experience and personal leadership stories to engage the participants in the programme and leadership behaviours and enhance the learning experience.
In addition, we trained a team of master trainers who went on to deliver train the trainer courses to internal HRBPs and trainers in 10 locations worldwide to enable them to deliver the programme locally. This has provided skills and engagement to the local teams and achieved the delivery capability needed to roll the programme out across all locations.
Senior leaders’ to support the programme has been significant. They have welcomed and embraced the training they have received. Feedback received has included:
‘Great to see the company moving this way’
‘It’s all about storytelling’
The train the trainer programmes have also been very successful and were significantly oversubscribed compared with initial predictions. Underpinned by a quality assurance process to ensure consistent delivery and best practice sharing, participants have had the opportunity to develop their facilitation skills and build their capability to deliver the necessary leadership essentials locally.
