When the kaleidoscope is shaken, one’s perspective of everything in sight is changed. Such was the remarkable realignment of politics in 2016. Cameron’s term in No. 10 cut short, Trump prevailing in the USA and a vote for the U.K. to leave the E.U.
So, as 2016 slips into our past, it might seem unwise to take to punditry and dare to predict anything about our future. Still, in the snapshots that follow from the FTI UK Public Affairs team, we hope that you find food for thought about what may await us in 2017.
I think that there are four broad themes to contemplate at home and abroad:
The political buzzword of 2016 seems sure to stay centre stage in 2017, with the French and German elections looming and the Trump presidency commencing. Perhaps our so-called “political elite” can finally learn that there are few things that do help a political campaign in the current climate as being sneered at.
The inexorable increase in incidents of our second trend may go some way to explaining the rise of our first. The politicians most able to convince the public that they grasp the reality of our situation, whatever that may be, will see rising support in 2017. Some politically correct shibboleths are likely to suffer in the process: we must be mindful that civil liberties do not go with them.
Negotiations and trade deals, rationality and emotion – 2016 saw us decide to leave the E.U. but 2017 will see us begin the reality of the process of doing so. Remember, we’ve not yet even invoked the famous Article 50: it may feel like you’ve been living with Brexit all your life – but it’s only just begun.
Whilst both now and for the foreseeable political future he clings on (obviously, as The Times puts it), Corbyn’s inability to command real loyalty from his parliamentary party remains perhaps the most important feature of the 2015-2020 Parliament and certainly the biggest break for Theresa May’s administration, which faces several contentious issues in 2017.
We hope that you enjoy our snapshots and, whatever 2017 may hold for you and yours, we stand ready to help meet your public affairs needs throughout the year.
