The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), a coalition of America’s leading oil and natural gas producers, first sought FTI’s expertise in 2009 to launch a media relations campaign to raise awareness of the issues facing the oil and natural gas industry, and to effectively communicate IPAA’s policy positions with key stakeholders. Independent producers, companies with an average of just 12 full time employees, produce roughly 54 percent of domestic oil and 85 percent of domestic natural gas. Yet these companies, many of them small businesses, were facing renewed legislative battles — from limited offshore drilling leases, increased taxes, and duplicative regulations on hydraulic fracturing – that threatened their ability to operate and produce critical energy resources.
To offset an increasing number of anti-industry editorials and “investigative reports” appearing in the mainstream media, FTI Consulting launched an aggressive nationwide media outreach campaign. In addition to tapping into and developing relationships with key members of the media, the practice devised a plan to rapidly respond to claims in the media through letters the editor and op-ed placements to counter inaccurate news coverage.
Later in 2012, FTI Consulting worked with IPAA to develop the Energy Tax Facts campaign, an IPAA program to combat the increased negative rhetoric surrounding oil and natural gas tax provisions, including the call by those opposed to the industry to repeal the Intangible Drilling Costs (IDC) deduction.
In 2013, IPAA called upon FTI Consulting to help run the ESA Watch campaign, an effort dedicated to educating the public and policymakers alike on the increased role of Endangered Species Act listing decisions as a tool to limit American energy development.
To date, FTI Consulting has placed numerous letters to the editor and op-eds in target markets that have generated more than 10 million impressions, including in Reuters, Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post, Salt Lake Tribune, Casper Star Tribune, Roll Call, Fox News, CNN, and CNBC. In addition, the FTI Consulting team operates both the ESA Watch and Energy Tax Facts web campaigns, providing up to date materials for reporters and policymakers alike on the key issues facing America’s independent oil and natural gas producers.
